Jo’burg’s thriving gay scene centers around the Heartland, a revitalized district in the center with loads of gay friendly hotels, bars, clubs, and cafes. Tel Aviv, the country’s most cosmo and diverse city has a small gay scene dominated by a few bars and clubs. The LGBT movement is strong here and growing, with openly gay public officials and a very liberal attitude towards gays and lesbians. Spend your days climbing around the Cape, taking wine tours, visiting a nude beach, and checking out a big game reserve and then head to trendy Greenpoint’s Waterkant Street for the best gay nightlife on the African continent. The rise of cosmopolitan cities like Cape Town and gay travel groups at the Big Game Reserves are just a taste of what’s to come. ![]() That said there are many underground scenes, helping hands, and friendly people that can make travel here more than worthwhile. In some countries the way of life simply banned by laws and person charged with any homosexual act could face years in prison. For gay and lesbian travelers, Africa and the Middle East represents somewhat of a challenge.
